Biting into integrated quality improvement: medical student and staff blinded taste test for sodium reduction improving medical education and care?
AbstractOver 90  % of Americans consume an excessive amount of sodium as a key salt ingredient, despite its contribution to morbidity and mortality. No known studies have analyzed the optimal salt reduction level for medical students and staff in characteristic restaurant recipes. Increased studies linking such qu ality improvement in medical education and care through lifestyle-based modifications with medical professionals in training may provide a promising model for competency-based medical education in the age of healthcare reform. A volunteer sample (n = 105) of medical students and staff was recruited over 3 wee...

An Analysis of California Pharmacy and Medical Students' Dietary and Lifestyle Practices.
Conclusion. A high proportion of pharmacy and medical students in California did not meet many of the dietary and physical activity recommendations. Health care programs may benefit from implementing nutrition and lifestyle education in their curriculum. PMID: 29200450 [PubMed - in process]

Medical interventions for the prevention of platinum-induced hearing loss in children with cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: At the moment there is no evidence from individual studies in children with osteosarcoma or hepatoblastoma treated with different platinum analogues and dosage schedules that underscores the use of amifostine as an otoprotective intervention as compared to no additional treatment. Since pooling of results was not possible and the evidence was of low certainty, no definitive conclusions can be made. Since we found only one RCT evaluating the use of sodium thiosulfate in children with localized hepatoblastoma treated with cisplatin, no definitive conclusions on benefits and harms can be drawn. It should be noted...

Sodium Acetate as a Replacement for Sodium Bicarbonate in Medical Toxicology: a Review.
Abstract Sodium bicarbonate is central to the treatment of many poisonings. When it was placed on the FDA drug shortage list in 2012, alternative treatment strategies to specific poisonings were considered. Many hospital pharmacies, poison centers, and medical toxicologists proposed sodium acetate as an adequate alternative, despite a paucity of data to support its use in medical toxicology. The intention of this review is to educate the clinician on the use of sodium acetate and to advise them on the potential adverse events when given in excess. We conducted a literature search focused on the pharmacology of sod...

The Digital Education to Limit Salt in the Home Program Improved Salt-Related Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors in Parents
Conclusions: The improvement in salt-related KABs in the DELISH program indicates the potential for online technology, to disseminate simple salt reduction education messages to families with primary school–aged children. Future work should seek to improve the quality of data collected by including a larger sample size and a control group to integrate the program within the school setting to enable wider dissemination.

Sodium Alginate Ultrasound Phantom for Medical Education
In this study, I show that adding ethanol to the precursors used to fabricate the phantom reduces the speckle pattern. The ultrasound propagation velocity and attenuation coefficient of the phantom were 1561 ± 8 m/s and 0.54 ± 0.18 dB/cm/MHz, respectively (mean ± standard deviation), which are within the ranges of those in human soft tissues (1530-1600 m/s and 0.3-1.0 dB/cm/MHz, respectively). This phantom is easy to fabricate without special equipment, is inexpensive, and is suitable for elementary training on ultrasound diagnosis, operation of ultrasound-guided needles, and blind catheter insertion.PMID:34036871 | DOI...
